"Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" is a theme composed in 1928 by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II for the Viennese-style Broadway operetta "The New Moon". Initially the style of this song was tango, but it didn't take long for several versions of jazz to emerge.

This theme has already been recorded and performed by several renowned artists such as Chet Baker, George Benson, Ron Carter, Jim Hall, Sonny Clark, Ray Alexander, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Stan Getz, Kenny Barron, Vince Guaraldi, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Kelly, Ellis Marsalis, Modern Jazz Quartet, Dianne Reeves, Emily Remler, Sonny Rollins, Artie Shaw, Dave Weckl and many others.
