Donna Lee is a BeBop theme, a style that revolutionized American music in the postwar period and dramatically changed the way jazz was played and enjoyed.

Donna Lee is Miles Davis' first recorded composition, but its authorship is commonly attributed to Charlie Parker for being credited on the original records at 78rpm, including the theme was copyrighted in 1947 under the name Charlie Parker.

There is a statement made by Miles in his 1989 autobiography:

"I wrote a song for the album called 'Donna Lee', which was the first song of mine that was recorded. But when the album was released, he listed Bird as the composer. But it wasn't Bird's fault. The record company made a mistake."

There are surprising interpretations of this jazz standard by great instrumentalists like Wynton Marsalis, Clifford Brown, Bireli Lagrene, Jaco Pastorius, Mike Stern, Arturo Sandoval, Jimmy Owens, Chet Baker and many others.

In this video we have the participation of guitarist Fábio Andrade reproducing on Charlie Guitar's solo recorded in the 1947 recording. The transcription of this solo can be found in "Charlie Parker Omnibook (1978)" on page 48.

The Backing Track used in this video is formed by a trio composed of drums, acoustic double bass and guitar. The tempo at 200bpm. You can find it here on our website by clicking HERE.
