Gloria’s Step Backing Track – Here you can improvise over this standard by Scott LaFaro, legendary bassist of the Bill Evans Trio.

“Gloria’s Step” is a jazz standard composed in the early 1960s by Scott LaFaro, this theme was recorded in 1961 on the fantastic live album “Sunday At The Village Vanguard” by the Bill Evans Trio, which besides Evans and Lafaro also included drummer Paul Motion. LaFaro lost his life in a car accident just 10 days after recording this album.

This theme has a format that may seem a little strange to music students at first, as it contains 20 bars, with the first half being divided into two 5-bar parts. But, with a good analysis of the form and harmonic progression, it is possible to have a lot of fun with the possibilities that this song offers, especially in its second part, which presents a sequence of tension chords, thus opening up a range of melodic possibilities.

This theme has also been interpreted by Chick Corea, Eddie Gomez, Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin, Gary Peacock, Joe Lovano, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among others.

This jazz standard can be found in the “Real Book vol.1” on page 172 and in “The New Real Book vol.1” on page 118.

This backing track is composed of drums, double bass and piano. The tempo is 158bpm.
