“Cotton Tail” was composed by Duke Ellington in 1940 and is based on George Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm”, whose harmonic progression, known as Rhythm Changes, became so famous that it inspired several other themes that also became jazz standards such as “Oleo” (Sonny Rollins), “The Flintstones Theme” (Bryson Goldberg), “The Theme” (Miles Davis) and “Eternal Triangle” (Sonny Stitt). It has AABA form with 32 measures.
This theme has been interpreted by great instrumentalists such as Ben Webster, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, Herbie Hancock, Scott Hamilton, Ray Brown, Benny Green, Hank Jones, Dave Grusin and many others.
This jazz standard can be found in the “Real Book vol.1” on page 95 and in the “Real Book vol.6” on page 90.
