“Song For My Father” was recorded in 1964 by Horace Silver for the album of the same name in honor of his father with the participation of Joe Henderson, Carmell Jones, Teddy Smith and Roger Humphries. It has a 24-bar AAB form. It has become a jazz standard and is probably Silver’s best-known composition. The song is inspired by Brazilian music and Cape Verdean Portuguese music. It is important to note that the rhythm section breaks at bar 6 in each section, both in the head and in the solos.
