Giant Steps Backing Track – In this jam track, students will face a great challenge: improvising over this Coltrane piece.

“Giant Steps” is a 1959 composition by the great saxophonist John Coltrane, released in 1960 on an album of the same name.

Here, students will come across a cyclical chord cadence that became known as “Coltrane Changes”. The theme is full of modulations from beginning to end in II-V-I cadences with and without substitutions. It is very important to do a complete harmonic analysis of this theme before improvising on it.

This jazz standard has been performed by several instrumentalists, such as Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Woody Herman, Joe Pass, Bireli Lagrene, Jimmy Bruno, Joe Lovano, Vital Tech Tones, Pat Metheny, John Patitucci, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham and many others.

This backing track is composed of drums, bass and piano. The tempo is 250bpm.
